Crafting Digital Writing Proposal

Proposal for Lesson Planning with Pinterest

Mode:

The mode that I will explore with my Crafting Digital Writing project is the usefulness of Pinterest as a lesson planning tool.

Media:

The media used in Lesson Planning with Pinterest will include a Pinterest account that features boards and pins that I can use as resources in my professional career as a secondary English teacher.

Audience:

The audience for Lesson Planning with Pinterest includes myself, my fellow classmates, administrators, and educators, as well as my future students.

Purpose:

The purpose of lesson planning with Pinterest is to explore the potential of following and connecting with other educators by saving and commenting on their pins, to collect educational resources for future use, and to prepare a digital writing activity for my future students.

I will accomplish this by creating a professional Pinterest account. My account will feature a professional profile including a photo, my location, and a short description of myself. My boards may consist of the following categories: young adult literature, classic literature, book talks, writing, classroom design, classroom activities, and a board for each grade level that I plan to teach.

These boards will be interactive because I will allow students to add pins to the boards for their grade levels. Students will be able to comment on and favorite their classmates’ pins. This type of sharing will create community amongst my students in addition to providing them with pins that can serve as visual aids.

Finally, I will follow other pinners, including current and future educators as well as organizations and publishers in order to stay up to date on current pedagogical techniques and literature. This group may include other English education majors, former high school teachers, teachers that I have met through field experiences and observations, and teaching organizations. In addition, I will follow publishing houses in order to stay up to date on the latest book releases. Some examples include the accounts of Penguin and Harper-Collins.

Situation:

This project may seem ambitious, but I think it is appropriate for the amount of time that I have at my disposal. I plan to create the account and have all of my boards set up by Monday if possible. Then I will find pinners to follow and add their pins to my boards. After, I will continue adding pins to my boards spontaneously up until the deadline. This will be a simple task because I am already familiar with Pinterest and enjoy using it in my free time.

Mentor Texts:

This page will be my primary mentor texts because I love the quantity, quality, and variety of their boards and pins. The captions below their pins are descriptive, which is something that I would like to model my own captions after. I also like the professional appearance of their account. I plan to pin their content as well as follow their account.

The National Council of Teachers of English has a strong Pinterest presence. I will be using their page as a mentor text because their boards include great resources for English education teachers. I plan to pin a substantial amount of their content as well as follow their account.

This mentor text serves as an example of what to do as well as what not to do. I like topics that this pinner has chosen for their educational boards and want to emulate that in my own boards. However, I dislike how the pinner posts personal boards alongside professional boards. This is something that I will avoid when creating my Pinterest page.
